Brazil banking scams cause significant financial losses

Multiple reports highlight a surge in banking impersonation scams across Brazil. In Campo Grande, a 30-year-old woman lost R$ 25,000 after a scammer posing as a new bank manager manipulated her into providing security credentials and access codes during a two-hour call.

In a separate incident in the same region, a 69-year-old woman lost over R$ 33,000 following a video call from an individual posing as a bank employee. The victim was instructed to open her banking app to verify suspicious transactions, leading to significant unauthorized transfers and debit card purchases.

In São José do Rio Preto, a speech therapist suffered a loss of approximately R$ 57,000. A woman claiming to be a bank manager convinced the victim to perform a registration authorization via internet banking, after which the victim's computer froze and unauthorized Pix transfers and bill payments were executed.

Additionally, in Paraná, the Civil Police arrested a man in Marumbi for qualified theft involving a parish office and a local pharmacy. The arrest was executed despite electoral restrictions because the suspect's voter registration had been canceled.
