Maruti Suzuki plans small EV expansion tied to charging infrastructure

Maruti Suzuki is planning to expand its electric vehicle (EV) lineup to include smaller, more affordable models in India. During the company’s Annual General Meeting, Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi stated that the launch of these small EV segments is contingent upon the sufficient expansion of the country’s charging infrastructure.

The company has already entered the electric passenger vehicle market with the e Vitara, a mid-size SUV manufactured at its Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. To support broader EV adoption, Maruti Suzuki is partnering with 13 charge point operators and has already established over 2,000 exclusive charging points across more than 1,100 cities. The company aims to reach over 100,000 charging points by the end of the decade, with a focus on highways and expressways.

In addition to EVs, Maruti Suzuki will continue to invest in petrol, hybrid, CNG, and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The company is designing its new manufacturing facilities to allow for flexible production lines that can accommodate multiple powertrain types based on consumer demand. The company also maintains a strong focus on exporting vehicles to approximately 120 countries.
