Marva Cook charged with illegal voting in New York

Marva Cook, a 66-year-old woman residing in Syracuse, New York, has been charged with illegal voting after authorities determined she is not a U.S. citizen. Cook, who was born in Germany and adopted by an American family at age two, stated she only recently discovered her German origins while searching for her biological mother.

Federal prosecutors allege that Cook participated in 14 elections between 1999 and 2022, with the specific charge stemming from her vote in the 2022 midterm elections. While Cook holds a permanent resident card (Green Card), federal law prohibits non-citizens from voting in federal elections. Prosecutors contend she was aware of her non-citizen status, though Cook maintains she always believed she was an American citizen.

If convicted of the misdemeanor charge of “voting by an alien,” Cook faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. She may also face deportation. Cook voluntarily turned herself in to authorities and has received support from members of her local community.
