Marvel comic book art and historic pages head to auction

Heritage Auctions has announced a lineup of historic comic book artwork for its upcoming Comic Art Signature Auction. A primary highlight is the opening splash page from the 1968 issue Iron Man #1, featuring art by penciller Gene Colan and inker Johnny Craig. This specific piece was previously owned by Marvel Studios founding chairman David Maisel and has already reached bids of $6,750.

Other notable items in the auction include Golden Age pieces such as Jerry Robinson's cover to 1942's Detective Comics #68 and Joe Shuster's cover to 1940's Action Comics #22. Modern classics are also represented, including Frank Miller's Daredevil pages and Jim Lee's cover to 1992's X-Men #6, which has seen bidding reach $135,000.

In related comic sales, graded copies of early Marvel appearances have also seen strong performance. A copy of Strange Tales #135, marking the first appearance of Nick Fury, sold for $2,458, exceeding its initial estimates. Similarly, Tales of Suspense #58, featuring Captain America, also performed well at auction.
