Marvel Comics announces new editorial strategy and Captain Marvel series
New Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Stephen Wacker has outlined a strategic vision to revitalize the publisher during New York Comic Con 2026. Wacker intends to shift toward a model featuring fewer comic book releases but with higher investment and support for each individual title. This approach aims to ensure creators are fully committed to their projects and to improve overall quality and sales.
Wacker also addressed industry challenges, including the complex distribution landscape following the failure of Diamond and the need for better retailer support. His proposed changes include new guidelines for variant covers to ensure main covers remain recognizable and a push for greater creative autonomy from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As part of this new era, Marvel announced a new Captain Marvel series written by G. Willow Wilson with art by Rachael Scott. The series will follow Carol Danvers during a difficult period following the events of Armageddon, positioning her as a central figure in the new Avengers lineup.
