Marvel Comics history and character evolution

Marvel Comics has a long history of genre experimentation, particularly regarding horror. Following reforms by the Comics Code Authority in 1971, which allowed for supernatural creatures handled in a classic literary tradition, the publisher expanded its horror offerings. This era led to the introduction of characters such as Morbius, Ghost Rider, Werewolf by Night, and Blade.

Beyond genre shifts, Marvel has also focused on complex character development, often transitioning villains into fan favorite heroes. For example, The Punisher, originally introduced as a villain hired to target Spider-Man, evolved into a prominent anti-hero following the death of his family.
