Marvel Television cancels Wonder Man despite high viewership

Marvel Television has cancelled the Disney+ series ‘Wonder Man’ despite the show previously receiving a renewal for a second season. The decision comes despite reports that the series achieved significant viewership milestones.

Data from Luminate indicates that ‘Wonder Man’ was the second most-watched Disney+ original season in the United States based on both estimated views and total minutes streamed. Furthermore, the series reportedly surpassed the industry-standard 50% audience retention benchmark, which is typically considered a commercial success for streaming platforms.

Lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II previously suggested that the cancellation might be related to viewership optics. In a recent interview, he expressed a diplomatic view, stating he felt ‘blessed’ to have played the role and that the experience remains a ‘celebration of the work’ done by the team. The creative leadership, including director Destin Daniel Cretton and showrunner Andrew Guest, had also been set to return for a second season.
