Marvel unveils horror-themed Midnight Universe at New York Comic Con
Marvel Comics has launched its “Midnight Universe,” a horror-themed imprint featuring reimagined versions of its major superhero franchises. The line, which operates outside of traditional continuity, includes Midnight X-Men, Midnight Spider-Man, and Midnight Fantastic Four.
At New York Comic Con, creators Jonathan Hickman, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, and Benjamin Percy shared details regarding the new directions for these characters. The Midnight Spider-Man series introduces a grim version of Doctor Octopus and follows an outcast police officer. The Midnight X-Men series explores a world of warring factions, including mutants and vampires, featuring characters like Nightcrawler and a redesigned, body-horror-inspired Beast. The Midnight Fantastic Four series focuses on themes of mad science and cosmic artifacts following a journey to the Jornada del Muerto desert.
The Midnight line utilizes a unique cover gimmick where the primary artwork remains obscured in shadow until the book is opened. The series aim to provide fresh, high-stakes takes on established teams, similar to the creative freedom seen in other major comic imprints.
