Marvel's VisionQuest avoids generative AI use
Showrunner Terry Matalas has confirmed that the Marvel Studios series ‘VisionQuest’ did not use generative AI in its production. Despite the show’s themes involving artificial intelligence, Matalas stated, “No, not at all,” noting that there was no need for the technology.
Instead, the production team, led by production designer Will Hughes-Jones, chose to manually recreate the visual errors commonly associated with generative AI as a form of creative commentary. Within the show’s ‘Mindscape’ setting, the crew built physical sets that mimic AI-generated glitches, such as stair railings that lead nowhere, furniture fused into walls, and objects with illogical proportions.
The series follows White Vision as he navigates his past and interacts with various AI entities, including his creator, Ultron. The production aims to use these hand-built, surreal environments to comment on the technology rather than utilizing it for visual effects.
