Marvel's VisionQuest explores AI themes and Captain America connections

The new Marvel Studios series VisionQuest, streaming on Disney+, explores themes of artificial intelligence and humanity through the character of Vision. The series features Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., an AI created by Tony Stark that has acquired a physical body and the ability to interact with other AIs.

The production establishes a narrative link to the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger by revisiting the Synthetic Man, a character briefly seen during the 1943 Stark Expo. In the series episode titled ‘Malware’, scientist Katerina Wells reveals that the Synthetic Man, identified as J.I.M., was a creation of Dr. Phineas Horton whose source code paved the way for future artificial intelligence.

The series also references the original Marvel Human Torch, Jim Hammond, an android created by Horton that faced combustion issues when exposed to oxygen. Vision acknowledges J.I.M. as the first of his kind, highlighting the historical evolution of synthetic beings within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
