Marvel's VisionQuest explores origins of original Human Torch
The Disney+ series 'VisionQuest' has introduced connections to Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, during its fourth episode. Hammond, an android created by scientist Dr. Phineas Horton, is presented as a technological predecessor to the character Vision.
In the series, Katerina Wells, CEO of Markridge Biotech, explains that Horton was a robotics pioneer whose source code served as a foundation for later artificial intelligence developments. This includes the first stable synthetic consciousness, which was eventually sold to Stark Industries.
In Marvel Comics lore, Hammond's synthetic body contained volatile 'Horton Cells' that reacted with oxygen, causing him to burst into flames. This character history links the series to broader themes of artificial intelligence and the evolution of synthetic beings within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
