Marvel’s Wolverine sales highlight continued demand for physical game discs

Data from Ampere Analysis indicates that Marvel’s Wolverine, developed by Insomniac Games, sold approximately 2.16 million units during its first month, making it the second best-selling PlayStation 5 title in September, trailing only EA Sports FC 27.

Despite Sony’s announced plan to phase out physical disc production for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, physical media remains highly relevant. Globally, 35% of Wolverine’s sales were on disc. This figure is significantly higher in Europe, where physical copies accounted for 51% of sales. Regional trends vary sharply: in France, more than two-thirds of purchases were physical, whereas in the United Kingdom, two-thirds were digital.

The strong performance of physical editions for single-player titles like Wolverine, Silent Hill: Townfall, and Onimusha has reignited debates regarding Sony’s digital-first strategy. Industry figures, including former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden, have raised concerns about consumer ownership and the value of the physical collector market.
