Yanis Varoufakis: AI is reviving Marxist economics in China

Economist Yanis Varoufakis suggests that the artificial intelligence revolution is revitalizing Marxist economic thought within China. While Chinese universities previously shifted toward Western economic textbooks, the rise of AI is prompting a re-examination of Marxist theories to address modern economic challenges.

Varoufakis highlights the risk of a ‘rentier trap,’ a condition seen in North Atlantic economies characterized by asset price inflation, stagnation, deindustrialization, and social turbulence. In this scenario, capital shifts from production to rent-seeking assets. He notes that China has already faced symptoms of this trap, citing the collapse of the construction giant Evergrande.

There is a divergence in how AI is being utilized: while some Western tech companies focus on AI agents for rental/service models, Chinese firms are increasingly turning toward industrial robotics and manufacturing goods. While some Chinese experts believe the state can direct investment to avoid the rentier trap through sectors like green energy and microchips, a minority of Marxist economists remain skeptical of the state's ability to resolve these systemic issues.
