Mary Austin recalls Freddie Mercury’s final moments

Mary Austin, the former fiancée of Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury, has shared reflections on the singer's final days before his death from AIDS-related complications in 1991. In an interview with The Guardian, Austin described the intense scrutiny from the British media, noting that tabloids hovered around his home like “vultures” to catch news of his declining health.

Austin recalled that the chaos forced Mercury to use body doubles to maintain privacy. She also shared a personal moment from his final moments, stating that while holding his hand as he drifted in and out of consciousness under the influence of morphine, he called her “my old faithful.”

Additionally, Austin clarified that while Mercury expressed affection through gifts rather than verbal declarations, the hit song “Love of My Life” was not written about her. Despite this, she noted that she does not feel embarrassed to refer to him as the love of her life.
