Mary Fowler withdraws from Matildas squad ahead of Germany and Haiti friendlies

Mary Fowler has withdrawn from the Matildas squad for the upcoming October international window due to “personal circumstances.” The decision followed discussions between Fowler, Manchester City, and Football Australia staff.

Fowler, a key attacking player for both club and country, will miss scheduled friendly matches against Germany in Karlsruhe and Haiti in the Paris region. These fixtures serve as critical preparation for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup. Leah Davidson of Charlton Athletic has been called up to the squad as a replacement.

While Football Australia has not officially confirmed the nature of the personal circumstances, reports indicate Fowler is in Australia to support her partner, NRL player Nathan Cleary, following his recent leg surgery. The absence of Fowler, alongside midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross, presents a challenge for coach Joe Montemurro as the team continues its preparation process.
