Montemurro stated that the decision was made in discussion with Fowler and her club, Manchester City, and that the team supports her choice. While Football Australia has not officially confirmed the reasons for her departure, there has been public speculation that Fowler returned to Australia to support her partner, Penrith Panthers rugby league player Nathan Cleary, following his emergency surgery for a broken leg.

Reports have suggested that Fowler’s decision may have caused frustration among some Football Australia officials, with some teammates allegedly being unaware of the situation.
