Mary Odili warns judges escape punishment over weak petitions in Nigeria

Retired Supreme Court Justice Mary Odili told participants at the South‑East Regional Security Summit in Umuahia that the National Judicial Council (NJC) can only sanction a judge when a petition is backed by solid evidence and material facts. She said many complaints are "watery" and lack the necessary proof, allowing accused judicial officers to avoid liability. Odili urged Nigerians dissatisfied with court outcomes to submit petitions to the NJC that include concrete evidence, noting that the Chief Justice of Nigeria reviews every petition. She emphasized that judges have a right to a fair hearing, but "once your petitions are verified and have the necessary credence, that judge will get the necessary punishment." Odili assured the public that the judiciary will continue to promote justice, peace and security in the country.
