Mary Teuw Niane warns of sectarianism and manipulative authority
Mary Teuw Niane, the Chief of Staff to the President of Senegal, has published a commentary titled ‘the guru and the sect’ regarding the psychological loss of autonomy and total submission of followers to manipulative authority.
In his reflection, Niane describes the mechanics of sectarian logic, where individuals renounce their own judgment to place their conscience in the hands of a single man. He asserts that this submission leads to a state of blindness where the leader's word becomes truth, lies become strategies, and mistakes are framed as trials. According to Niane, such a figure becomes untouchable and accountable to no one.
The commentary also highlights the treatment of dissenters within such structures. Niane notes that those who question or criticize are often subjected to social and professional destruction to protect the leader's reputation. He concludes that in these environments, the focus is not on debating ideas, but on destroying the individuals who think independently.
