Maryland allocates millions for affordable housing and veteran support
The State of Maryland has secured significant funding for two major housing initiatives aimed at increasing affordable living options and supporting vulnerable populations.
In Baltimore, the state has closed over $49.3 million in financing for the next 150 affordable apartments within the Perkins Homes redevelopment project. This funding package, which utilizes federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, bond financing, and state Rental Housing Works funds, will support construction for phases 5A and 5B. The broader Perkins-Somerset-Oldtown program aims to replace aging public housing with 1,346 energy-efficient rental homes, with 73 percent reserved as affordable housing.
Additionally, Governor Wes Moore announced more than $23 million to expand housing for veterans experiencing homelessness. This funding will support the second phase of the HELP Perry Point Veterans Village in Perryville, located on the campus of the Perry Point Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The expansion will add 77 homes, effectively doubling the community's capacity to provide permanent supportive housing for veterans and their families.
