Maryland and DC region implement new laws on October 1

Several new laws are set to take effect on October 1 across the Maryland, District of Columbia, and Virginia region.

In Maryland, Senate Bill 439 provides employment protections for firefighters, paramedics, and other emergency medical technicians who hold valid medical marijuana certifications. Under this law, employers cannot discriminate against or terminate these workers based on their certification or positive tests for marijuana metabolites. However, employers maintain the right to prohibit use while on duty and must report any instances of impairment to the State Emergency Medical Services Board.

Maryland is also implementing the Predatory Pricing Act, making it the first state to ban dynamic pricing for groceries and other items based on personal data. Additionally, businesses can no longer refuse cash payments for essential goods under $300 during specific hours. New law enforcement regulations in the state will prohibit officers from wearing face coverings and require visible identification while on duty.

In the District of Columbia, changes to paid family leave will see a reduction in weekly benefit maximums and a decrease in the duration of family and medical leave. The Pets in Housing Amendment Act of 2024 will also begin regulating rental housing pet fees and rules.
