Maryland and National AI Upskilling Programs Aim to Transform U.S. Workforce

Governor Wes Moore announced a $1.23 million investment in Maryland’s Lighthouse Industries Upskilling and Reskilling Program, which will support nearly 600 workers in acquiring skills for AI‑driven sectors such as life sciences, technology, aerospace, defense, and manufacturing. The program, funded through the state’s Talent Innovation Fund, partners with industry and educational institutions to deliver hands‑on training and expand the talent pipeline for Maryland employers.

At the same time, analysts are urging a broader overhaul of the United States’ workforce development model to keep pace with rapid AI advances. The proposed “hire education” approach calls for employers to continuously feed current technology knowledge into curricula, enabling educational content to be updated every few weeks rather than years. Platforms like the STEM City USA Workforce Development Platform are cited as examples of how industry‑driven learning ecosystems could democratize workforce knowledge and better align education with the fast‑moving AI economy.
