Maryland announces $14.5M in safety grants and $21.9B transportation plan

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) has introduced significant funding and planning initiatives aimed at improving state infrastructure and roadway safety.

As part of a federal highway safety grant program, Maryland will distribute over $14.5 million to 99 agencies and nonprofits starting October 1. These funds are designated for programs addressing impaired, aggressive, and distracted driving, as well as increasing seat belt use and improving safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists. This initiative follows a reported decline in roadway fatalities, with 486 deaths recorded in 2025.

Additionally, MDOT has released a draft $21.9 billion Consolidated Transportation Program for fiscal years 2027 through 2032. The six-year capital budget focuses on maintenance, infrastructure modernization, and economic growth. In Southern Maryland, the plan includes major projects such as a $32.3 million upgrade to MD 5 in Great Mills, which includes bridge replacement, and various drainage and pedestrian safety improvements across St. Mary’s, Charles, and Calvert counties.
