The Maryland State Police announced heightened DUI enforcement for the Fourth of July weekend, deploying the State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort (SPIDRE) unit and high‑visibility patrols from July 3‑5. Officers urged travelers to use designated drivers, rideshare services, or public transit, reminded motorists to buckle up and avoid distractions, and warned social hosts of potential legal liability if guests drive impaired.

Separately, the Maryland Department of Transportation reported 181 traffic fatalities in the state so far in 2026, with 27 deaths recorded between June 22‑28. This year’s total is down from 221 at the same point last year.
