Maryland County Schools Show Gains on State MCAP Assessments

The Maryland State Department of Education released 2025‑2026 MCAP results showing notable proficiency improvements in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS).

MCPS saw science proficiency rise to 40.1% (up 4 points), English Language Arts to 58.5% (up from 57%), and mathematics to 36.9% (up from 35.7%). Statewide averages were 32.4% for science, 51.7% for English, and 27.1% for math. Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor said the progress demonstrates "clear momentum" and highlighted the district’s focus on foundational instruction.

CCPS students outperformed state averages as well, with 66.6% proficient in English Language Arts versus the 51.7% state rate, and 37.9% proficient in mathematics versus 27.1% statewide. Superintendent Dr. Marcus J. Newsome praised the effort of students, staff, and community partners while noting a continued commitment to improvement.
