Maryland football defense shows mixed results ahead of Big Ten play

Maryland football faces scrutiny regarding its defensive performance following a 35-26 loss to Virginia Tech. Despite leading the Big Ten in sacks, the Terrapins' defensive line struggled to contain Hokies quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, who recorded 327 total yards and four touchdowns.

Defensive standout Sidney Stewart has been recognized by Pro Football Focus College, ranking No. 9 among all Power Four defenders in quarterback pressures this season. Stewart has recorded 12 pressures, including a sack and a forced fumble in a recent game against UConn.

Expectations are also high for freshman edge rusher Zion Elee, the highest-ranked recruit in program history. However, Elee saw limited usage in the Virginia Tech game, playing only 18 of 82 defensive snaps and recording no solo tackles. The team also continues to face challenges with its run game, having recorded the fewest rushing yards in the Big Ten in 2025.
