Maryland Governor Wes Moore discusses redistricting and Southern political strategy

Maryland Governor Wes Moore is facing a significant political test regarding a ballot measure that would allow state Democratic leaders to redraw congressional district lines. The proposal seeks to eliminate requirements that districts obey natural boundaries, such as the Chesapeake Bay, potentially allowing for a map where all eight districts favor Democrats. While Moore and allies, including former President Barack Obama, frame the measure as a defense against Republican redistricting efforts, support for the measure has been weaker than anticipated. A failure to pass the measure could represent a setback for Moore amid speculation regarding a potential 2028 presidential run.

Separately, Moore addressed the Democratic Party’s strategy in the U.S. South during an appearance on ABC News’ ‘This Week’. He stated that several statewide races in historically Republican states, including Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina, are ‘in play’. Moore argued that the Democratic Party has made mistakes by failing to invest in the region earlier in this generation, noting that chronic underinvestment has hindered the election of diverse, history-making candidates.
