Maryland launches $200 million renewable energy program
Governor Wes Moore has announced “Megawatts for Maryland,” a $200 million initiative designed to expand the state’s electricity supply and reduce energy costs for residents. Administered by the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) through the Strategic Energy Investment Fund, the two-year program will provide up to $100 million annually in grants to developers.
The funding aims to offset construction costs for large-scale renewable energy generation and battery storage projects. State officials expect the initiative to generate hundreds of megawatts of electricity, enough to power more than 150,000 Maryland homes annually. The program was established under the Utility RELIEF Act, which also provided $100 million in direct financial relief to utility customers.
The initiative seeks to address rising electricity demand and skyrocketing regional energy costs, particularly those driven by data centers. Developers must submit preliminary applications by November 30, with a competitive bidding process following. Final submissions are due by January 22, 2027.
