Maryland law enforcement agencies pursue CALEA accreditation

Maryland law enforcement agencies are making strides in professional accreditation. The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) has enrolled in a three-year process to earn accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). This move makes the NRP only the second state conservation law enforcement agency in the United States to seek this distinction. The process involves a comprehensive review of the agency’s management, training, and operational policies.

Separately, the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office has successfully completed a two-and-a-half-year review and received national accreditation from CALEA. The assessment evaluated the agency against 183 professional standards, covering areas such as investigative operations, patrol, and personnel practices. The accreditation process included an examination of written manuals, employee interviews, and public feedback regarding the agency’s community involvement and service delivery.
