Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller discusses immigrant representation

Aruna K. Miller, the Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, has become the first woman, person of color, and immigrant to be elected to statewide office in the state. Born in Hyderabad, India, Miller moved to the United States at age seven in the 1970s.

Miller noted a significant transformation in the Indian American community since her arrival, citing the IT boom as a driver of increased diversity. She observed that South Asian Americans are now increasingly represented in fields such as science, entrepreneurship, business, and public service.

Emphasizing the importance of representation, Miller stated that seeing leaders who reflect their lived experiences helps immigrant communities feel a sense of belonging within their country and local communities.
