Maryland Moves Preakness Stakes to Sunday and Extends NBC Deal Starting 2027
Governor Wes Moore announced that, beginning with the 152nd running in 2027, the Preakness Stakes will shift to a Sunday date and be held three weeks after the Kentucky Derby, moving the race later in the calendar. The state also completed the acquisition of the intellectual‑property rights to the Preakness and the Black‑Eyed Susan Stakes, securing Maryland’s control of the multi‑billion‑dollar equine industry. A multi‑year extension of the partnership with NBCUniversal will see the Preakness and Black‑Eyed Susan broadcast on NBC, Peacock and NBCSN through 2032, giving the races expanded weekend exposure.
At the same time, racing officials introduced a new Thoroughbred Championship Series that includes the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes but excludes the Preakness, prompting industry leaders to question the future of the Triple Crown. Concerns were raised about whether the Crown will retain its prestige and how the altered schedule will affect the traditional three‑race challenge.
