Maryland offers diverse cycling routes and trail designations

Maryland offers diverse cycling opportunities ranging from coastal routes along the Chesapeake Bay to mountain paths in the Appalachians. The state capital, Annapolis, was recently designated as an IMBA Trail Town by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, recognizing its commitment to developing and maintaining cycling infrastructure. Key local attractions include the Baltimore-Annapolis Trail, Waterworks Park, and the Bacon Ridge nature reserve.

In the western part of the state, cyclists can utilize the Western Maryland Rail Trail and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal towpath. The city of Frederick features a 16-kilometer History Bicycle Loop through its downtown area. Frederick is also home to the only high wheel race in the United States, featuring vintage bicycles and attire, with the next event scheduled for July 10, 2027.
