Upper Marlboro death ruled a suicide amid community concern
A Black man was found hanging from a tree on Sunday morning near D’Arcy Road and Sansbury Road in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. The body was discovered outside a Crane Service Company building in the Westphalia area.
The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has ruled the death a suicide, stating there were “no other signs of trauma to his body.” Despite this ruling, the Prince George’s County Police Department has stated that detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances.
The incident has caused significant distress within the local community due to the historical associations of such imagery. Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy and Councilmember Wala Blegay have addressed the community, acknowledging the pain and the need for transparency.
Some residents and legal representatives have called for further scrutiny. Lawyer J. Wyndal Gordon has requested a search warrant for the Crane Service Company building, noting the site has limited surveillance and that the company is currently facing a federal race-discrimination lawsuit.
