Maryland police pursuit ends in fatal wrong-way crash

A high-speed pursuit in Maryland ended in a fatal wrong-way crash on Crain Highway near Brandywine on August 25. The incident began after Charles County Sheriff’s deputies attempted a traffic stop in Waldorf following an alert from Arlington County police regarding an occupant with over 20 active warrants.

Authorities identified the driver of the involved Toyota as 34-year-old Miya Stringfield, who was wanted on multiple felony warrants across several Maryland and Virginia counties. During the initial stop, Stringfield reportedly locked the passenger door, forced the original driver to exit, and climbed into the driver’s seat. She then pushed an officer out of the vehicle before fleeing with a passenger still inside.

The pursuit concluded when the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck two vans. Stringfield sustained serious injuries, while a 33-year-old passenger, Alexis Monique Cummings, died after being transported to a trauma center. Occupants of the other vehicles survived with non-life-threatening injuries. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is overseeing the investigation.
