Maryland religious institutions to receive $8.6 million in federal security grants
Maryland's congressional delegation has announced more than $8.6 million in federal funding to bolster security for 49 religious institutions and community centers throughout the state. The funding is being distributed through the Department of Homeland Security’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP), which is designed to assist high-risk nonprofit organizations in strengthening their preparedness and protection measures.
Recipients include various Chabad institutions in the Baltimore, Montgomery, and Prince George’s County areas, as well as several organizations in the Washington, D.C. vicinity, such as the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School. Other beneficiaries include the Beth Tfiloh Congregation and the Talmudical Academy of Baltimore.
Lawmakers, including Senator Chris Van Hollen and Representative Jamie Raskin, emphasized the necessity of these resources in response to rising concerns regarding antisemitism, Islamophobia, and other forms of hate-motivated threats targeting houses of worship and community organizations.
