Maryland reports 39 traffic fatalities in September

Maryland reported 39 traffic-related deaths in September, a decrease of 15 fatalities compared to September 2025. Total roadway deaths through September 2026 stand at 328, an 11% decline from the 369 recorded during the same period last year.

Despite the overall downward trend in fatalities, motorcyclist deaths have increased significantly. Sixty motorcyclists have died on Maryland roads this year, surpassing the total of 49 recorded for all of 2025. Other categories, including drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, remain below last year’s pace.

As the state enters the fall season, the Maryland Department of Transportation and State Police are warning motorists about seasonal hazards. Drivers are advised to prepare for reduced visibility due to earlier sunsets, wet pavement from rain, and loss of traction caused by fallen leaves. Authorities are urging motorists to share the road with vulnerable users, obey speed limits, and remain vigilant in work zones and school areas.
