Maryland school board candidates highlight transportation and budget concerns
Maryland school board candidates for the upcoming November 3 election have identified transportation difficulties, academic proficiency, and financial sustainability as primary concerns. According to a questionnaire completed by over half of the 137 candidates, issues regarding student transportation are widespread, affecting both urban and rural districts. In Prince George’s County, for example, a recent backlog left approximately 10,000 students without bus assignments.
Candidates also expressed significant apprehension regarding the ‘Blueprint for Maryland’s Future,’ a $30 billion, 10-year education reform plan approved in 2021. While many candidates support the plan’s objectives—such as expanding early childhood education and increasing teacher salaries—a majority of respondents noted concerns regarding the administrative and financial burdens of its implementation.
As the nonpartisan elections approach, with early voting scheduled from October 22 to October 29, candidates are emphasizing the need for long-term, sustainable decision-making that prioritizes academic excellence and efficient budget management.
