Maryland women’s soccer defeats Fordham 1-0 in season opener

The Maryland women’s soccer team secured a 1-0 victory against Fordham in their 2026 season opener at Ludwig Field in College Park. The win marks Maryland’s tenth consecutive victory in a season-opening match.

After a scoreless first half characterized by strong defensive play from both sides, Lily Bane scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute following a pass from Jolie Farmer. Maryland’s defense was anchored by sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Fisher, who made several key saves in her collegiate debut, and freshman Mckinley Heaven.

Coach Michael Marchiano, who is working to rebuild the program, utilized a lineup featuring several newcomers, including four starters from a group of 12 new additions. The victory provides early momentum for a team looking to improve upon its previous season's performance in the Big Ten.
