Marzling Transfers Archaeological Finds to Freising District Under New Bavarian Treasure Rule

The municipality of Marzling will hand over all archaeological objects uncovered in its area to the archaeological depot of the Freising district, following a model ordinance sent by the district office. The change implements the Bavarian treasure rule introduced in 2023, which makes movable cultural heritage the property of the Free State of Bavaria and requires municipalities to transfer ownership to a designated institution.

Mayor Thomas Sellmeir explained at the latest council meeting that Marzling lacks suitable storage facilities and the expertise needed for proper conservation, so the district’s archaeology service will assume responsibility for storage, restoration and scientific processing. One notable exception is a bronze sword that will remain displayed in a local school. Existing significant finds from the Riegerau burial mound are already housed in the Freising city museum. The mayor indicated no additional costs for the municipality.
