Masahiro Sakurai featured in Bungeishunju list of notable Japanese figures

Game creator Masahiro Sakurai has been included in Bungeishunju’s ‘50 Beautiful Japanese People of the Showa Centenary’ feature. Sakurai, known as the creator of the ‘Kirby’ series and the ‘Super Smash Bros.’ franchise, was highlighted for his significant contributions to game culture.

In the publication, he is described by Taihei Nagata as a ‘genius of game making who spends his own fortune.’ The feature places him alongside other prominent figures such as Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko, chess player Yoshiharu Habu, and baseball player Shohei Ohtani.

Sakurai’s industry impact includes his long-running columns, the establishment of the Game Designers Award, and his YouTube channel, ‘Masahiro Sakurai on Making Games,’ which focuses on sharing technical expertise and design philosophy with a global audience.
