Masaryk University researchers achieve scientific breakthroughs in genetics
Scientists at Masaryk University in Brno have achieved two significant milestones in genetic research. A team from the Institute of Botany and Zoology has developed 61 new genetic markers designed to more reliably and affordably distinguish between species of terrestrial mollusks. This method addresses long-standing difficulties in identifying species where physical appearances are deceptive or closely related. The new markers allow for the creation of internationally comparable genetic databases and have already been used to suggest the unification of the Retinella and Aegopinella genera.
Separately, researchers at the CEITEC research center have achieved a world first by assembling the complete genome of an apomictic plant from the genus Boechera. Apomixis is a process where plants produce seeds without sexual reproduction, allowing offspring to maintain identical genetic traits across generations. While practical agricultural applications for crops like wheat or rapeseed remain a long-term goal, this genome provides a vital reference map for scientists to study the genetic mechanisms behind asexual reproduction.
