Maskandi artists raise R200,000 for Scebi Dlamini and Sipho Mchunu funerals

Maskandi musicians raised R200,000 via a WhatsApp group to fund the funerals of award-winning artist Scebi Dlamini and his backup dancer, Sipho ‘Gupta’ Mchunu. The funds were collected by fellow artists to assist the families with the financial burden of the burials.

The funeral for Dlamini, known as ‘Inkosi yamaGcokama’, was held at Mzisho Stadium in uMsinga, KwaZulu-Natal, drawing thousands of fans from provinces including the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and the Free State. During the service, Maskandi legend Thokozani Langa praised the artists for demonstrating ‘the true meaning of ubuntu’ through their collective support.

Dlamini and Mchunu died in a car accident on the John Ross Highway near Richards Bay while traveling to a festival. During the memorial, Dlamini’s brother, Nduduzo Dlamini, revealed that the musician had experienced a vivid dream regarding his own death and funeral arrangements months prior to the accident.
