Masoud Barzani calls for compensation on Enfal anniversary

Masoud Barzani has issued a message marking the 38th anniversary of the Badinan Enfal massacre, condemning the systematic genocide carried out by the former Iraqi Ba'ath regime against the Kurdish people. Barzani highlighted that the military operations, conducted between August 25 and September 6, 1988, involved the use of chemical weapons, mass executions, and forced displacement intended to destroy the Kurdish will and alter the region's demographics.

The Enfal campaign, which the Iraqi High Criminal Court recognized as genocide in 2007, consisted of several stages of violence. The final phase targeted the entire Badinan region, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of villages and the deaths of thousands of civilians. Historical records indicate that over 182,000 Kurds were killed through massacres and executions, with many others being forcibly moved to southern Iraq.

Barzani called upon the current Iraqi government to fulfill its responsibilities by providing compensation to the victims and their families to restore their rights.
