Mass General Brigham researchers develop AI to assess cancer mortality risk

Researchers at the Mass General Brigham medical network in Boston have developed an artificial intelligence system capable of estimating the mortality risk of cancer patients using only a single facial photograph. The system, named FAHR-Face (Foundation Artificial Intelligence for Health Recognition), analyzes facial features to identify health indicators without the need for blood samples or invasive examinations.

In the study, which was published in the journal The Lancet Digital Health on October 19, 2026, the AI identified a high-risk group in which more than half of the patients died within three months. The model was trained using a foundation of over 40 million facial images. The research was led by radiation oncologist Dr. Raymond Mak and Hugo Aerts, the Director of the Program for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine at Mass General Brigham.
