Mass General Brigham study links thymus radiation to worse lung cancer outcomes
Researchers at Mass General Brigham have found that incidental radiation exposure to the thymus is associated with poorer outcomes for patients treated for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study, published in the ‘Annals of Oncology’, analyzed 1,107 patients and discovered that those whose thymus was exposed to radiation faced an increased risk of cancer metastasis and mortality.
The thymus is a small immune organ located behind the breastbone that produces and trains T cells, which are essential for fighting infections and cancer. While the organ was previously thought to be largely irrelevant after puberty, recent research suggests that many adults retain measurable thymic function. The study indicates that protecting the thymus during radiation therapy could potentially improve clinical outcomes and immunotherapy responses.
Lead author Hugo Aerts, director of the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine program at Mass General Brigham, noted that because the thymus often lies close to chest tumors, it frequently receives unintended radiation. The findings suggest that preserving thymic health may become a critical consideration in cancer treatment planning.
