Mass grave discovered at former Stalag II-D site in Poland
Polish researchers have discovered a mass grave containing the remains of dozens of people at the site of a former Wehrmacht prisoner-of-war camp in Stargard, West Pomerania. The site, known as Stalag II-D, was one of the largest POW camps in the German Reich during World War II.
Experts believe the remains belong to Soviet prisoners of war. Historical estimates suggest approximately 6,000 people died due to inhumane conditions within the camp system, particularly among Slavic prisoners.
Excavations at the site have been ongoing since 2021, following years of research supported by local historians. Previous excavations were hindered by the site's use as a military training ground and a landfill. The current project is co-financed by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. To date, researchers have recovered the remains of approximately 400 individuals.
