Mass shooting at Bondi Beach and surge in global antisemitic attacks in 2025

In December 2025 a mass shooting at a Chanukah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney killed 15 people, marking the deadliest single antisemitic incident outside Israel. The same year saw a total of 20 murders in antisemitic attacks across seven countries, including two deaths at the Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester and two at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., as well as a fatal shooting in Boulder, Colorado.

The J7 Large Communities’ Task Force Against Antisemitism reported more than 23,000 antisemitic incidents in 2025, a 136% rise from 2022, and labeled antisemitism in the surveyed nations as “our new normal.” Australia experienced the sharpest increase (270%), followed by Germany (215%) and France (124%). The report urged governments to provide security funding, enact stronger laws and hold social‑media platforms accountable.

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti‑Defamation League, warned that the violence represented one of the most severe years for Jewish communities in recent history, with attacks occurring at an average of 17 times per day in the United States alone.
