Massachusetts allocates $40.3 million for energy storage and backup power

The Healey-Driscoll administration in Massachusetts is distributing $40.3 million through the Department of Energy Resources to fund 36 energy storage projects across the state. The Advancing Massachusetts Power Energy Storage grant program aims to enhance local resilience, safety, and education by installing battery storage systems at critical sites.

Recipients include schools, wastewater facilities, and community centers to ensure service continuity during power outages or severe weather. Notable awards include $2.5 million for Springfield Water and Sewer for a wastewater treatment plant installation, $1.44 million for Mohawk Trail Regional School, and $412,000 for Double Edge Theatre in Ashfield.

Additionally, the Franklin Regional Council of Governments will receive $12,800 to support first responder training regarding battery technology, recycling, and fire containment. The statewide initiative is expected to add approximately 10 megawatts of battery storage capacity to the grid.
