Massachusetts and Idaho present opposing firearm ballot questions

In the upcoming November elections, voters in Massachusetts and Idaho will face contrasting ballot questions regarding firearms.

In Massachusetts, a referendum will determine whether to uphold a 2024 law that requires all firearms to be serialized and registered with the state, while also broadening the ban on “assault-style” guns. The question was placed on the ballot after opponents gathered enough petition signatures to force a referendum. Some gun owners have expressed frustration over a registration deadline that occurs prior to the vote.

In Idaho, the Republican-led Legislature has placed a nonbinding question on the ballot to seek public advice on designating an official state gun. Voters will choose from six historic firearms, such as the M1 Garand, to represent the state.
