Massachusetts appoints first Heat Resilience Officer

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has appointed Katie Schlick as the state’s first Heat Resilience Officer. Schlick will be responsible for coordinating state agencies and collaborating with communities to prepare for rising temperatures, protect public health, and mitigate the impacts of extreme heat.

Schlick, who previously served as a special assistant to the White House National Climate Advisor, will report to State Climate Chief Melissa Hoffer and Public Health Commissioner Dr. Robbie Goldstein. The role is fully funded by the Boston Foundation with an annual salary of $90,000.

Massachusetts is the second U.S. state to establish such a position, following Arizona. The move comes as officials note that extreme heat poses significant risks to public health, water supplies, agriculture, and infrastructure.
