Massachusetts bill to extend bar hours for 2026 World Cup

State Representative Carole Fiola has introduced House Bill 6086, which would let Massachusetts municipalities permit restaurants and bars to serve alcohol for an additional hour – up to 3 a.m. – during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, from June 1 through August 31, 2026. The bill also authorizes local officials to designate zones where public alcohol consumption is allowed and to permit on‑premises licensees to sell drinks for off‑premises consumption in those zones.

The legislation was referred to the House Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies and awaits a Senate assignment. Local business owners, including the owners of Boston’s The Dubliner and Hennessy’s, have voiced support, citing expected tourism and economic benefits. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu backing the proposal, while some officials, such as City Councilor Ed Flynn, have raised concerns about potential drunk‑driving risks. Similar temporary alcohol‑service extensions have been enacted in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Kansas for the same tournament.
